Oga's Tourism Information

Namahage Museum

Namahage Museum

The museum consists of three halls, where you can experience the Namahage of Oga throughout the year. 150 Namahage masks are on display. The museum displays a variety of valuable materials that will make you wonder why the legend of the Namahage remains in the land of Oga. The exterior walls are made of stones, and the interior, with its abundant use of Akita cedar, creates an atmosphere of its own. The masks of Namahage, which are performed in about 60 districts in Oga City, each have a slightly different style. The masks and costumes from each district are all on display, and are well worth seeing. The tour takes 30 to 40 minutes. Inside you can be guided by an expert.
